Wildlife / Buhay-Ilang

The gruesome decimation of the jungle in the 70 and 80s, when greedy chain saws felled most of the centuries old, mighty giants, impacted wildlife very badly. Over a short time thousands of creeks dried out. Thereafter, the wadies exploded only during the rainy season. Water masses then shoot down, clearing megatons of soil into the sea, suffocating coral reefs and their inhabitants.

Unlike in Europe where the forest zone reaches up to ca. 1,800 m asl trees grow up to 2500 m in the Philippines. In those days jungle giants grew almost up to the peak of Mount Halcon (2,586 m, the highest peak in Mindoro).

The ruthless exploitation took its toll. Much wildlife perished, even extincted. We need to do all and everything to protect what belongs to our children. Nature is amazing. If we stop our insults and give it time, it very often recovers again!
