The yellow hibiscus is the state flower of Hawai. Their pretty flowers attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. dried hibiscus, i.e. their calyces are edible. The Hibiscus aculeatus is an ingredient (labog) to enhance the acidity flavor of vegetables and chicken soup.
In the Philippines, the Gumamela is used to make bubbles. The flowers and leaves are crushed until the sticky juice appears. Mix with soap, and blow your bubbles (Tarukanga) using hollow Papaya stalks.
Wear a Gumamela flower behind your left year and signal so that you are married or have a boyfriend. Wear one behind your right year and signal so that you are available for a relationship.
The red hibiscus is the flower of the Hindu goddess Kali.
