Gmelina is a fast growing deciduous tree Up to 30m high, it has a wide spread canopy with numerous branches forming a large shady crown. The straight, cylindrical bole is commonly around 50cm in diameter, and sometimes even over 1m.

Gemelina is harvested for local use as food, medicine and as a source for semi-hard lumber for furniture and construction. The tree has suitable characteristics for aggro-forestry, with fast growth, ease of establishment, and relative freedom from pests. It regenerates well from sprouts and seeds. It has been introduced as a plantation species in many countries in SE Asia and in W and S Africa.
